Gen Z Protest in Nepal 2025:
Historic Fight Against Corruption and Political Reform
Nepal witnessed a historic moment in September 2025, as Generation Z in Nepal led a massive protest against corruption. What began as a peaceful youth activism movement quickly became a defining chapter in Nepalese politics, shaking the foundations of government and inspiring millions across the nation.
Nepal: A Kingdom Never Colonized
Nepal,
the Himalayan kingdom, is unique—it was never colonized and does not officially
celebrate Independence Day. In ancient times, the region was divided into 22 to
24 small kingdoms, each ruled by different kings. These principalities were
unified by King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, whose
leadership created a unified nation that has lasted through centuries.
The Road to Democracy and Political Reform
The
Shah dynasty ruled Nepal for over 240 years, with the Rana regime
dominating for 104 years as ceremonial monarchs. Eventually, democracy emerged
after persistent struggles by the people.
In
2006 AD, King Gyanendra, the last monarch, left the palace following
protests led by Maoists and seven major political parties. Nepal endured a
decade-long civil war demanding equality and the abolition of monarchy,
resulting in over 17,000 deaths. The war ended with a peace treaty,
ushering Nepal into a republic era. In 2015, the country adopted a new
constitution through its elected representatives, paving the way for ongoing Nepal
political reform.
Corruption Fuels Frustration
Political
parties—including the Nepali Congress, Unified CPN-UML, and Maoist Party—assumed
governance through elected representatives. Over time, widespread corruption
in Nepal became a major source of public frustration. Citizens were
dissatisfied, setting the stage for a historic youth-led movement demanding
accountability.
The Protest That Shook Nepal
On
8th September 2025, Generation Z in Nepal organized a peaceful
protest against corruption. Tragically, security forces fired on demonstrators,
killing at least 19 young activists, with reports indicating more than 72
casualties overall.
The
unrest escalated, affecting government buildings, including Singh Durbar,
the Supreme Court, and the President’s Office, as well as police stations
and municipal offices. The violence spread to private properties, including
shopping complexes like Bhatbhateni and Chandra Giri Cable Car,
and offices of political parties. By the night of 9th September, the Nepalese
Army intervened to restore order.
Turning Point: Army Intervention & First Female Prime
Minister
With
the support of the Army Chief, a new government was declared on 12th
September 2025, led by former Chief Justice Ms. Sushila Karki, Nepal’s first
female Prime Minister. She was mandated to conduct elections within six
months and dissolve the existing parliament. This marked a critical moment in Nepal
political reform, signaling the fall of the old political nexus.
A Nation Hopes for Change
The
people of Nepal are now demanding peace and a corruption-free environment.
While the situation has calmed, the real test is the commitment of political
parties to reform themselves.
If
the youth continue to step into politics with a vision to serve the community,
Nepal has enormous opportunities for growth and progress. Citizens across the
country eagerly await peaceful elections in Nepal 2025 to elect clean,
capable representatives who can lead the nation toward a brighter,
corruption-free future.
